As Sanders Draws 10,000 in Wisconsin, Support for 'Revolution' Doubles in Iowa

Speaking to largest crowd any campaign for president has yet seen, the field's most progressive candidate says "a grassroots movement of millions of people" must overcome power of "handful of wealthy campaign contributors."

I live in the Madison area and had no idea he was coming! Kicking myself now. Maybe he will come back later.

Love me some Bernie! I wish that Arkansas was progressive enough or had primaries soon enough for him to come here.

The Clinton campaign is already starting to try and brand him as an "extremist", even though he's advocating for things that used to be totally mainstream for the Democratic party (and still are to voters, if not the politicians). I was really skeptical of Bernie's chances at first, but seeing this early enthusiasm for his campaign is encouraging. I'm convinced an overwhelming majority of people in this country truly want what he is advocating for. Bernie just needs to find a way to break through the silly labels that have been attached to him, and he can win.

Same! He is definitely performing better than I thought. He may have a chance at the nomination!

He's only 4 years or so older than Hillary, right? He does look older, though...

Here's my honest analysis of the situation. The Dems have a strong lead right now. They have one nominee who is a household name (and not because she's a joke) and a second strong progressive who is forcing her to remain loyal to liberalism while she courts the center (our boy Bernie). All Hilary needs to do is to continue pulling at her experience and staying the hell away from the craziness of the Republican self-destructive cycle.

While a lot of people - I think - believe she'll want Bernie for the VP, that's not what he's here for in the race. His presence is to keep Hilary liberal, and to keep social issues in the forefront of the Democratic appeal. And he's done a good job of that, but I don't think he'll be VP. Maybe cabinet job, or something. VP, if Hilary is smart, will be Jim Webb. While Virginia has been trending liberal lately, any shakiness there is gonna screw over the electoral base the Dems have been gaining, so Webb would easily be able to help secure that, and his younger and centrist appeal would help Hilary stabilize even further.

However, the recent investigations into Benghazi and her email and such may put a damper on things. While there's speculation that this might cause another Dem to rise, I don't think the party wants to trash Hilary's already strong lead with division. That gives the Republicans more opportunity. And as much as I like Bernie, unless there's a radical shift in the voting ways and his populist appeal continues building, Hilary's going to get the nod.

Meanwhile, in the Republican clown car, if Trump maintains momentum the GOP's gonna have a hard time of things. The man isn't rational, and he's a detriment to not only himself but his party. If he doesn't get the nomination, he'll run independent, which will take precious votes away and all but secure Hilary the Presidency right then and there. It doesn't matter if Bush or Rand is the choice; Trump will drag the party down.

If he does get the nomination, that's even worse. He's the sort of ultra-conservative whom the progressive front hates, which will catalyze them away, and he's the sort of Republican the GOP can't deal with. The smart VP move on his choice would be John Kasich, the Governor of Ohio, as Florida and Ohio will be crucial for Republican support in the next election. Bush would be the second choice, but I see Florida as more likely to go Rep without a VP nod than Ohio.

But again, Trump isn't reasonable, and even with a relatively strong GOP backing this early, Hilary has the Democrats. This is her year with them, it's her time. And the fact that everyone keeps talking about her and keeps forgetting/laughing at all the Republicans isn't a good early sign for any GOP hopeful.

On the rest of the playing field, Rubio isn't doing himself any publicity favors, and Jeb just wouldn't viably be able to squash Hilary. In a Clinton/Bush rematch, Clinton wins again. And I don't really see the GOP holding fast once they've been trashed so many times repeatedly.

But, as has been stated, it's all pretty early still. I still believe what I said is the likeliest course, but these things can be roller coasters. We'll see in a couple months how things are shaping out.

Your analysis is pretty logical, I must say.

I do think Hillary is a weaker candidate than you give her credit for though. Sure, she's got a name. But... what else? She served in an administration reviled by the GOP, and her time under Obama will surely be used to thrash her ("Obama is Satan, and she was right there beside him"). That email thing is only going to serve to drive people from her, as it already has (I think she's down what, 20 points in the polls since announcement?). She's the epitome of an establishment politician in a race that is certainly leaning toward "outsiders" (Sanders, to an extent, as well as Trump). She's already lost once before, which isn't generally a strength- coming back for more doesn't guarantee anything. Personally, I think Bernie will smash her on the debate stage when the time comes.

The Republican's best shot is Sanders getting much closer and making the Democratic primary a dirty, divisive affair. While they start to shed candidates like the boosters on the Saturn V rocket, eventually they'll get a candidate into orbit with support garnered through a medieval primary (especially if it's Trump, in which case I foresee it passing "medieval" and moving onto "Game of Thrones-esque." If he marries his daughter to Jeb Bush's son or something for his support, I wouldn't be surprised). If Hillary and Bernie rip each other up bad enough, the Republicans have a shot, even with a terrible candidate like Trump or Jeb Bush.

If the Democrats resolve things peaceably, though, I think it'll be a Democratic win hands-down.

I think Bernie can do more than push Hilary to the left. I don't think its unreasonable to say he could be our next president. However, the challenge will be translating the excitement among his core supporters to enough democratic primary voters. But now that I say it, that scenario sounds awfully familiar. Everyone in 2008 said Obamas spark would fizzle out and everyone would crawl back to the establishment choice. We saw what happened there. And even though the primary was rough, both sides made up enough that it didn't affect the general election.

The Democratic primary will decide the president. Republicans are done for the foreseeable future in presidential politics. The demographics have shifted against them and they can't gerrymander the electoral college like they have congressional districts.

Hillary has the same thing going for her that Obama had, she will be the 'First Lady President'; don't be surprised when she wins on that alone. Almost all the women I know all say the same thing, 'She is being screwed by those in the 'smoked filled cloak rooms.' -kinda like eRepublik is governed.
